A lifetime devoted to the royal game

For over three decades, I've focused on one thing: turning curious beginners into confident, thinking chess players. My journey began in 1977, and since then I've competed in 25+ SA Opens and over 25 Adult Interprovincials, served as a union president and head coach in multiple regions, and guided countless juniors toward South African colours.

I've been selected as National Coach 15 times and SA Head Coach 4 times, and have coached the South African Junior Teams and provincial teams many times over the years — alongside years of coaching chess in schools. It's a depth of experience that very few coaches in the country can match, and I've been lucky enough to mentor several of the coaches working in South African chess today.

I coach fluently in both English and Afrikaans, and work with students locally in Pretoria and online across the globe. But ask my students what makes the difference and you won't hear about titles. You'll hear that I'm patient, that I'm always available to help (expect a same-day WhatsApp reply), and that I make lessons genuinely enjoyable — whether you're seven years old learning how the knight moves, or an adult chasing a rating goal.

My coaching philosophy

I believe every player has a ceiling far higher than they imagine. My approach blends solid fundamentals, honest game analysis, and a study plan tailored to you — all delivered with encouragement, never intimidation. The goal isn't just a better rating; it's a player who understands why the right move is right.

The atmosphere matters just as much as the material. A student who is afraid of making a mistake stops taking risks — and a player who stops taking risks stops improving. So we treat every blunder as information rather than failure. Mine included.

What chess gives you beyond the board

I've never thought of chess as only a game. Sixty-four squares turn out to be a remarkably honest rehearsal for life.

Every move you make has a consequence you'll meet again a few moves later, and you can't take it back. Chess teaches you to think before you commit, to weigh a decision on its merits, and then to live with the result. That lesson lands far harder over a board than it ever does in a lecture.

It teaches patience, too. Real positions don't give up their secrets in five seconds, and learning to sit with a hard problem — instead of grabbing the first idea that looks exciting — is a skill that pays off in exam rooms, in boardrooms, and in most difficult conversations.

It teaches you to plan while staying flexible. You'll have a strategy; your opponent will have other ideas. Adapting without panicking is something every chess player learns the hard way, and then carries everywhere else.

And perhaps most valuable of all, chess teaches you how to lose. Everyone loses — I still do. What matters is going back over the game, finding the moment it slipped, and being a slightly better player next time. Resilience isn't a talent you're born with; it's a habit, and the board builds it quietly, game after game.

Parents often tell me the change shows up away from the board first: more focus on homework, more patience, more confidence to attempt something hard without needing to be rescued. That's the part of coaching I'm proudest of.
